At first sight, hackers and hippies appear to be on opposite ends of the spectrum, but when it comes to saving the environment, they are like peaches and cream.
The rising demand for energy efficient appliances has spread to technology as well. Products such as power supplies, motherboards, computer hardware, and televisions have become "green" thanks to technological engenuity.
Green IT
Hardware developers are continuously designing and producing new items that reduce the amount of energy consumed, rather directly or indirectly, by appliances.
One of the most recent developments is a wireless kit produced by People Power. This kit, known as SuRF (Sensor Ultra Radio Frequency), would allow it's users to remotely control devices such as thermostats, lights, and even water sprinklers while they are away. This is made possible due to the union of a system-on-chip based processor chip and radio frequencies that can be accessed by Open Source Home Area Network (OSHAN) technology. This new kit could help homeowners and corporations of all sizes control energy-hungry appliances while they are away.
In an effort to help small and mid-sized data centers maximize output while reducing energy consumption, HP has unveiled three services under the Small Footprint Analysis. These services are:
- Basic Capacity Analysis - This service helps data center operators allocate their resources more efficiently by analyzing the center's qualitative power and computing capacity, which helps determine whether a facility could withstand future support needs.
- Infastructure Condition and Capacity Analysis - This analysis identifies aged and obsolete hardware and system processes, which could become weak points within the infastructure.
- Energy Efficiency Analysis - This analysis takes individual, detailed measurements of each piece of equipment's energy consumption, including the cooling system, to pinpoint power inefficiency.
Green Entertainment
Shopping for a new television or home theater system is usually an exciting time for most, but it can quickly become a headache once the electricity bill arrives. To avoid high energy consumption, check for an Energy Star rating.
Televisions with an Energy Star endorsement are ensured to have a low stand-by energy consumption (usually one watt or less). In general, it is wise to purchase a LCD screen television if it is smaller than 40" because over the span of one year, the average plasma television uses more electricity than a refrigerator.Becoming more energy conscious takes time and determination.
Many companies are beginning to phase out their power-hungry devices is exchange for energy efficiency. This change helps ensure consumers purchase items that reduce the amount of electricity used regularly. Research on any new product is key to making the best purchase in the eyes of both the consumer and the environment.
